Iran and Australia: Relations Perspective
The relationship between Iran and Australia is characterized by friendship, with a mutual Action Plan in place to expand our ties. We maintain regular contact and engage in exchanges of opinions and consultations with our Australian counterparts, particularly through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Meetings between general political directors and frequent visits by special representatives for Afghanistan affairs demonstrate the depth of our engagement. Additionally, I maintain regular communication with Australia's head of regional relations to address areas of cooperation and mutual interest.
In the realm of West Asian affairs, we maintain contact with Australian officials at various levels. Over the past two years, there have been three telephone conversations between the Iranian Foreign Minister and his Australian counterpart, highlighting the importance we place on our bilateral relations.
Our relationship with Australia is dynamic, as evidenced by our Action Plan aimed at expanding services for Iranians. Since my arrival in Australia, we have implemented a regular development program to enhance the quality of our services, resulting in a significant reduction in waiting times for consular services from two months to approximately two weeks. This improvement has been well-received by Iranians, as indicated by the numerous letters of appreciation we have received.
Efforts to establish a direct flight program between Iran and Australia have been ongoing since 2017. While the program was implemented at one stage, we are now focused on re-establishing it to facilitate the movement of Iranians and Afghans traveling to Iran for work. Reinstating the direct flight program would not only ease commuting but also promote tourism between our two countries.
In conclusion, our assessment of relations with Australia is positive, with a clear path for further progress and growth. We remain committed to strengthening our ties through continued cooperation and dialogue with the Australian government and relevant authorities.
Iran and Australia: Foreign Policy and Non-intervention Principle
The foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is guided by principles of mutual respect, non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations, and the expectation of non-interference in its own affairs. This policy is founded on the pillars of mutual respect and national interests in its relationships with friendly countries. Iran's friendly relations with Australia, established in 1968, have been consistently maintained and have progressed positively.
In this context, we prioritize compliance with the regulations of the host country and adhere to a professional approach in our dealings. Our engagement with Australia is twofold: first, through our effective representation to the host government, and second, in providing services to Iranians residing in Australia. Our activities in Australia are conducted within this framework. Any claims made in the past year, of which we are unaware, lack substantiation and do not align with our documented policies. We are unable to ascertain the context or basis for such claims and therefore, we categorically reject them.
Our mission is clearly defined: to facilitate communication and promote understanding of the views of the Islamic Republic of Iran, while also receiving and addressing reciprocal opinions from Australia. Additionally, we are committed to providing consular services to all Iranians residing in Australia, regardless of their political beliefs.
Iran and Australia: Economic and People Relations
Relations between Iran and Australia at the people-to-people, chamber of commerce, and private sector levels are dynamic and evolving positively. There is a significant number of interactions occurring, contributing to the growth of these relations. In 2022, the economic volume of our relations reached approximately 314 million Australian dollars. While the statistics for 2023 have not yet been published, it is anticipated that this figure will increase by an additional 100 million dollars.
Iran and Australia: Perception of the IRGC as a Terrorist Organization by Some in Australia
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), originating from the Islamic Revolution and the Islamic Republic of Iran, has played a significant role in countering terrorism in Iran and its surrounding region. Its efforts began during the imposed war by Saddam Hussein against Iran, where the IRGC played a crucial role in defending the country. Subsequently, during the emergence of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, the IRGC cooperated openly with the official defense forces of these countries against terrorism. Therefore, claims suggesting the IRGC supports terrorism lack any factual basis, as the IRGC has consistently been a clear force against terrorism.
Iran and Australia: Services Offered by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Australia to Iranians
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran maintains a neutral stance in this regard and does not engage in any activities related to this matter. However, the services offered to Iranians are accessible to all Iranian citizens residing abroad. Our doors are open to all Iranians, irrespective of their beliefs, and they are welcome to visit us at any time to avail themselves of the necessary services provided to Iranian citizens. Additionally, if required, they may also request to meet with me, and we are always ready to accommodate such requests.
Iran and Australia: Challenges Iranians May Encounter When Returning
The judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran has issued official directives at the highest level regarding legal proceedings. For instance, individuals who commit crimes against others are considered to have a defendant (private plaintiff), thereby constituting a criminal offense. Furthermore, Iran stands prepared to receive such individuals. For instance, in cases of murder where the victim's family seeks retribution, the perpetrator must be held accountable upon their return.
Iran and Australia: Prospects for Holding Joint Economic and Consular Commissions
We are currently awaiting the appropriate conditions for convening the joint economic commission of both countries. Additionally, there are ongoing discussions regarding the joint consular commission, with numerous areas identified that serve the interests of both nations. These discussions aim to benefit the citizens of both countries. We anticipate progress in these areas to enhance the tangible benefits of our bilateral relations, promoting mutual prosperity and advancing our cooperation.
